Air Purifiers Could Trap Swine Flu Particles
Have you started getting tired of the swine flu jokes that invariably come up every time someone sneezes. No doubt thats something to be relieved about – if we’re making jokes it means things aren’t serious. The rate of spread has until now been relatively quiet, given the potential wide spread. But to become lax and off guard about this would be rather silly. Obviously there’s still a real risk that this thing could blow up, even in a few months time. In the UK the health service recently distributed a leaflet to every household in the country about how to prevent the spread of swine flu germs. This leaflet can basically be boiled down to one sentence: “always sneeze into a tissue, then throw it away, wash your hands and bathe yourself in a vat of boiling elephant milk”. (fine, that last bit was made up). I guess my point is that if governments are willing to take their public education that far it means they too see it as a real threat, worth potentially upsetting us.
Well, tissues aside, a UK company that specialises in air conditioners has come up with a novel and potentially important way of preventing swine flu. According to JS Humidifiers’ blog, an air purifier could be effective in trapping and removing particles of swine flu virus from the air before it has a chance to spread. Air purifiers are usually used to cleanse the atmosphere in a room of pollutants and impurities which cause allergic reactions and even respiratory diseases, as well as unpleasant odours. However the HEPA filters fitted on many air purifiers are able to trap particles of as small as 0.3 micrometers. The swine flu virus particles, just like ‘normal’ influenza particles, are aroun 80 to 120 nanometers in diameter, and therefore within the range of what a purifier would pick up.The purifiers that have an ultra violet lamp inside them are virtually guaranteed to stop the flu, as the UV light kills all airborne viruses.
This is really a remarkable discovery. Instead of relying on people who may be infected with swine flu to sneeze into a tissue and constantly wash their hands, imagine the increased containment of having air purifiers fitted in public places like schools and offices! Is it time for governments to ensure that air purifiers are installed in large public buildings. And maybe this summer when you are considering buying a portable air conditioner for the home or workplace, you might think about cleansing the air as well as cooling it.
Ionic Air Purifiers – Safety First
User safety tops all criteria in the selection of an ionic air purifier for use in the home, office, factory or school.
Existing ionic air purifier technology, regardless of whether they originate in North America, Europe, Japan or China produce a primary beneficial reactive agent. These reactive agents are known variously by names like negative ions, bipolar ions, plasmacluster ions and so on. Their prime role is to eliminate airborne contaminants in our indoor living environment. Much has been published on the efficacy of these reactive agents in eliminating contaminants. What we do not know is whether these same potent reactive agents also cause harm to delicate human tissues such as those that line our breathing passages from the trachea to the lungs.
There is also an information vacuum about whether there are other by-products and if these are harmful to human tissues as well. In the industry, however, it is known that current ionic air purifier technology inadvertently results in the production of by-products. In sufficient quantities, these may prove harmful to human tissue. Ozone is one of the potentially toxic by-products. In high concentrations, ozone has been proven to damage human tissues.
Accordingly, for the ionic air purifier user, the issue of safety has to be addressed from these two perspectives:
(1) Potential harm from the beneficial reactive agents, and
(2) Potential harm from the unintended by-products.
Though not exhaustive, our intensive research on these two perspectives have been condensed into two detailed write-ups that have been featured on Ezinearticles.com.
