The Doctor Who Series And DW Audios Collection: Some History

If you live in one of the mayor English speaking countries chances are it will have been difficult for you to of not, at the very least, heard of the Science fiction legend Dr. Who! Now that Doctor Who is back on TV since 2005 after it’s 15 year absence the show has gotten very popular again, so mush so in fact that even the sci-fi channel has taken an interest in the series.

Thanks to the new serial DW is currently officially the longest running Science fiction show ever with the first episode broadcasted by the BBC on November the 23rd 1963, an episode in which the Dr. and his comrades voyaged back one hundred thousand years into Earth’s past to help out some somewhat dim cavemen so that they could discover fire.

With the great success of Doctor Who, the BBC started creating Doctor Who Audio back in the 70s for cassette and LP. Initially the BBC solely created soundtracks from the original serial & then had the Doctors of the time add some linking narration for completion. However because of their popularity soon after stories were produced for Audio Book release only, often narrated by past Drs of the TV serial.

To add to this the BBC began creating radio stories, again with past Doctors who had played in the series, these episodes were also made available in Audiobook format. Also many of the lost shows have been re done by their original Doctors in the Audio format making them finally available to the public once more. The range spans all the way though the 1st Doctor right up until the present Dr, David Tennant. Additionally Torchwood Audiobooks & Sarah Jane Audio have also been added recently.

One of the really good things about Doctor Who Audio Books is that they provide us the freedom to listen to our favorite episodes anywhere we please with the use of the modern mp3 player. Audio Books help us to obtain more out of our increasingly busier days, as it is so easy for as to listen to them while doing other things like working out, house work, driving, & other activities that permit multitasking. Another great factor about audio titles is that they are very often narrated by their original actors, which really adds to the whole experience. They are also a excellent choice for long car rides, especially with children as there’s nothing like a good Dr. Who storie to keep them occupied.

With the Doctor Who New series going from strength to strength and more and more Audios being produced available both from the old and new show and now from Torchwood & The Sarah Jane Adventures as well, it looks like Dr. Who & Dr. Who Audiobooks are here to stay for some time to come!

Author visits can be both fun and educational

Author school visits are very frequently arranged in most countries. It is natural for schools to promote reading and writing so that children can enjoy it all their lives. The guest author can inspire the children while knowledge and understanding can be passed to them in a fun way.

It is definitely true that reading a good book or using the imagination to construct a new fantasy adventure, is bound to feed their young minds. Successful education is built upon the secure foundation of quality reading and writing.

Using language in a thoughtful and inventive way, as well as following the instructions written on a box of foodstuff, depend upon literacy competence. A visiting writer has the enthusiasm and skill to entice children into the realm of books.

It is a marvellous time for children and teachers when author visits happen. The author may speak to small groups of children or large gatherings in the school hall.

The pupils understanding will develop because they are meeting a real, live author.  They will learn about the essential qualities of a highly practised writer. They can enter into the author’s mind as he explains how he became an author. They will hear about the joys and difficulties of creating books.

A common question put to authors is, “How do you get your ideas?” The reply from an actual author will come from years of practice and make a real impact on children. The creation of ideas is very important to an author of fiction and they can talk about it with enthusiasm. They can give examples of moments of inspiration. Through all this, the pupils will discover their ability to be creative when writing.

Children have the chance to buy the author’s books and this is a further appealing aspect of the author talk day. The books are personally signed by the author which makes them unique to each child. The children leave with a keepsake of the day in the form of a book which they will read.

If you want to help children’s education then organise author school visits. It is a very pleasing and practical approach to their language development.

Learn From Warren Buffett

Warren Buffett was born in 1930 in Omaha, Nebraska, USA and has become probably the world’s most successful investor. He is the son of a stockbroker and Congressman, and of course everyone wants to learn about his trading secrets.

I don’t think that Warren Buffett has actually written a book about his investment principals himself, in that sense there is no Warren Buffett book, but he has from time to time given hints in his annual letters to share holders of Berkshire Hathaway, and in other short notes and reports to the media.

However there have been a lot of books written about Warren Buffett by others who have tried to put together the story and ideas behind the man and his fortune.

In fact if you go to Amazon and do a search for “Warren Buffett” will find 2,576 books being listed, compare that to “Bill Gates”, who for a long time was also considered to be the riches man in the world, and you only find 11 listings, that should give you some idea about the public obsession with the man.

I have only read one of his books called “The Warren Buffett Way”, it was quite hard work and somewhat of a boring read. Much of the content of all these books on Warren Buffett seems to be the same basic information about value investing and being patient with your investments. I don’t think much can be gained by reading more than one of them.

Here is a small selection of some of the better known ones:

The Warren Buffett Way, Second Edition by Robert G. Hagstrom, Ken Fisher, and Bill
The Snowball – Warren Buffett and The Business of Life
The essential Buffett library
Investing – the Last Liberal Art – by Robert Hagstrom
Buffett, by Roger Lowenstein
The New Buffettology, by Mary Buffet and David Clark
The Interpretation of Financial Statements: by Benjamin Graham
Value Investing: by Janet Lowe
Robert Hagstrom, The Warren Buffett Way -
Buffettology by Mary Buffett and David Clark
Janet Lowe, Warren Buffett Speaks – Wit and Wisdom from the Word’s Greatest Investor
John Train, The Midas Touch – The Strategies That Have Made Warren Buffett ‘America’s Preeminent Investor’.
Andrew Kilpatrick, Of Permanent Value, The Story of Warren Buffett
Warren Buffett, Lawrence Cunningham, editor, The Essays of Warren Buffett
Ms Janet M. Tavakoli, Dear Mr. Buffett: What An Investor Learns 1,269 Miles From Wall Street

Many of these books are quite large, with many pages that would take a long time to read, and even longer to understand and make any sense of. A better way of understanding Buffett maybe to find investment articles which have summarised the Buffett principals into short concise lessons that can be quickly learnt and applied.

One point of caution however, and this is not investment advice, Buffett has made most of his fortune during the years of the great USA bull markets, times have changed and it is possible these principals are no longer as effective as they used to be.

Adult Genre Product Lines Featured at ‘High Street’ Online Shop: Ann Summers

“A destination store for all discerning shoppers” is how Ann Summers bills itself. Its product lines are in the adult genre, and are lingerie, sex toys, “dressing up,” “fun stuff,” lubes and aphrodisiacs, “hen and stag night,” bondage, books and DVDs.

Ann Summers has a chain of retail stores in England and Ireland, is headquartered in the UK, and is known for booking product parties for women only. In the United States, customers have access to the company’s full product line through the Web site at www.annsummers.com.

The story of company Chief Executive Jacqueline Gold is an interesting one, on the road to becoming one of Britain’s most successful businesswomen. She’s become known, according to the company Web site, as the “woman responsible for bringing sex to the high street.”

Jacqueline’s had no formal business training, by her own admission, but it’s turned out to be her strength.

“The best piece of advice I could ever give,” she is quoted as saying on the company Web site, “is to be true to yourself.” “As a woman, you should never compromise your femininity or create an aggressive stereotype in order to emulate your male counterparts – it’s not necessary.”

At the age of 21, Jacqueline’s inspiring business journey began. While working at her father’s business, she saw the potential in taking lingerie and sex toys to women in their homes and creating the Ann Summers’ Party.

Before being made Chief Executive in 1987 and creating an empire run by women, for women, Jacqueline learned the hard way, working her way through the ranks.

Ann Summers now boasts a sales force of more than 7,500 women as party organizers, and now has more than 130 high street stores in the UK, Ireland, and the Channel Islands and one in Spain. Another five branches of Ann Summers opened across the UK in 2008.

Knickerbox had losses of £5m when Jacqueline bought it in February 2000, but it is now one of the highstreets most successful brands.

The takeover of Knickerbox added another 26 stores to the Ann Summers’ group, plus franchises in Ireland, Iceland and Denmark.

Summer Reading List!

You hear the groans from students and parents alike as every June the teachers merrily wave the students on their way to summer vacation with cries of, “Have fun! Go outside! Don’t forget your sunscreen! Read! Read! Read! Don’t forget your book checklist.”

Why do schools do this? Research shows that children who read during the summer do better in school. It’s that obvious. These students not only become stronger readers, but also show improvement in writing and spelling. By diving into good books during those long summer months students are doing themselves a favor. But try telling that to someone who just wants to sleep in and hang out!

How can parents encourage reading during the summer break?

To get the reading off to a great start, get your reader involved from the start. Forget your own ideas about what constitutes a “classic” and let them choose their own books from the list, if one has been provided by a teacher. If your child’s school hasn’t sent them home with a summer reading list, create one by browsing online together. Look for Web sites that highlight award-winning books, like mommypicks.com. Make sure your child has a lot of input in the list you create together. If your child doesn’t like the book they won’t read it—would you?

Next, head to the store, library, or online bookstore with two or three ideas in mind. Explain that while a cover may look cool, or a title may sound catchy, it helps to read the back cover blurb or the online summary to see if the story sounds interesting. Then—and this is the hard part—stand back. Let them browse. Stay close in case there are questions, but choosing one’s own book gives the reader ownership. That alone may go a long way to getting the book read without a fight.

How to get the pages turning …

Once the books arrive at home, your best bet to a hassle free experience is to share the reading. Depending on age and ability parents can read the book to the child, alternate reading one page with each other, or listen to your child read aloud a few pages and you finish up the chapter. Readers of all ages love to have a story read to them—some just show it more than others.

Wondering if this is too much work just to get a book read? Experts say that children with parents who are actively involved in their schooling do better in the classroom. By showing your interest and taking the time to read with your child you are demonstrating that reading has value; that reading can be fun; that reading is something you also do—not just something you say your child has to do.

Say it out loud!

Still having a difficult time getting the reader motivated? Go over the story together one chapter at a time and then talk about it so you are sure they were comprehending the story line. But try not to grill them with comprehension questions! Instead, ask your reader for their explanation. For example, say you didn’t get the point about something a character did, and can they help you understand. Their answer, as they roll their eyes and sign, will let you know if they are in fact “getting it.”

Another way to get students to read is to have them record themselves reading the book. It is a long process and one you are best not to get too involved in as students like to read the story, listen to themselves, laugh hilariously and then re-read the story again but this time “with feeling.” Once done your reader can play the recording for you as they show you the pictures and watch your reaction. If it is a chapter book, this process might be a long one, so surprise them by reading a chapter first and then have them record one. You may not have the energy to keep recording it, but by this time you are already into chapter three and, with luck, the reader will be hooked.

Above all, make it obvious that you are enjoying the reading. You never know, you may discover some new authors and hidden gems that will give your “classics” a run for their money.

As an elementary and middle school English teacher with more than 20 years experience, Claire Fripp knows a thing or two about encouraging kids to read.
