The Doctor Who Series And DW Audios Collection: Some History
If you live in one of the mayor English speaking countries chances are it will have been difficult for you to of not, at the very least, heard of the Science fiction legend Dr. Who! Now that Doctor Who is back on TV since 2005 after it’s 15 year absence the show has gotten very popular again, so mush so in fact that even the sci-fi channel has taken an interest in the series.
Thanks to the new serial DW is currently officially the longest running Science fiction show ever with the first episode broadcasted by the BBC on November the 23rd 1963, an episode in which the Dr. and his comrades voyaged back one hundred thousand years into Earth’s past to help out some somewhat dim cavemen so that they could discover fire.
With the great success of Doctor Who, the BBC started creating Doctor Who Audio back in the 70s for cassette and LP. Initially the BBC solely created soundtracks from the original serial & then had the Doctors of the time add some linking narration for completion. However because of their popularity soon after stories were produced for Audio Book release only, often narrated by past Drs of the TV serial.
To add to this the BBC began creating radio stories, again with past Doctors who had played in the series, these episodes were also made available in Audiobook format. Also many of the lost shows have been re done by their original Doctors in the Audio format making them finally available to the public once more. The range spans all the way though the 1st Doctor right up until the present Dr, David Tennant. Additionally Torchwood Audiobooks & Sarah Jane Audio have also been added recently.
One of the really good things about Doctor Who Audio Books is that they provide us the freedom to listen to our favorite episodes anywhere we please with the use of the modern mp3 player. Audio Books help us to obtain more out of our increasingly busier days, as it is so easy for as to listen to them while doing other things like working out, house work, driving, & other activities that permit multitasking. Another great factor about audio titles is that they are very often narrated by their original actors, which really adds to the whole experience. They are also a excellent choice for long car rides, especially with children as there’s nothing like a good Dr. Who storie to keep them occupied.
With the Doctor Who New series going from strength to strength and more and more Audios being produced available both from the old and new show and now from Torchwood & The Sarah Jane Adventures as well, it looks like Dr. Who & Dr. Who Audiobooks are here to stay for some time to come!
