Old School Walleye Fishing Family Secrets

Fishing with nightcrawlers for fish species such as walleye, bass and trout is quite common. The trouble is you need lots and lots of nightcrawlers or worms to fish for these species. If you are a avid walleye fisherman you know what i mean. You are constantly re-baiting your hook to make your live bait presentation enticing, and it is very easy to use dozens of nightcrawlers in one fishing outing. To limit or eliminate your cost of live bait it makes good sense to build a worm farm and raise your own night crawlers and worms. You will be amazed how simple this actually is.

To build a worm farm you need to understand a few basic principles of worms and nightcrawlers. Worms are what is called a hermaphrodites. Basically what this means is that both the female and male worm or nightcrawler have sex organs so therefore they are both breeders. You still need to have two worms worms to breed but since they are both breeders it doesn’t mater if you have male or female worms, just that you have two nightcrawlers. Catching both is very simple to do, But before we get there there is some preparation you need to do. and that is constructing your worm box and filling it with the right kind of soil.

You can either construct a worm box that you can locate outside of the ground say in your basement or garage or you can construct one that fits in the ground. Night crawlers and other worms feed by eating their way through the ground so you want the soil you put in your worm box to be fertile and full of nutrients. If you have a compost pile this type of soil is perfect. dead or rotting vegetation in the soil is perfect for nightcrawlers and other worms to feed on. Or you can go to a local garden soil and purchase at least 25 lbs of fertile soil to start out with. In order for your worms to reproduce consistently you need to keep your soil moist and full of nutrients at all times. left over table scraps  ground up and sprinkled over the the surface of your worm box works great for feeding nightcrawlers.

To construct a worm box get yourself some 1 x 12″ white or yellow pine. you want your box to be at least 24 inches deep so you will have (2) 12 ” wide boards stacked together on for sides. the length and width of your box should be at least 3ft by 3ft. So you finished worm farm box would be 24″ deep x 36″ deep x 36″ long. Once you have your box completed line the inside with plastic sheeting 1/8″ thick if possible. attach to the bottom and all insides of you box with adhesive or a staple gun. next if you have some ground up table scraps and newspaper mixed all together sprinkle it evenly in the bottom. next fill your box with your fertile soil to within 2 ” from the top of the box. Then mix the soil and sprinkling all together. Know you are ready to fill your box with crawlers for a box this size you need to start off with at least 6 dozen nice fat nightcrawlers.

Now you are ready to start catching your night crawlers. Wait for a rainy night and get your flashlights together and head out to the lawn after dark. Make sure you do not shine your flashlight directly on the crawlers. What you want to is sneak up so you can get your hand behind them then put your hand over them and squeeze gently this will make it easier to pull the nightcarwlers out of the whole. One thing you want to look for is two night crawlers that are all slimy and right next to each other all stretched out. these are breeding crawlers and pick up as many of these as you can find because that way you will have baby nightcrawlers in your box with 2 to three weeks.

One of the best live baits to fish for walleye in late spring and summer, and one of the easiest baits to get are nightcrawlers.Actually there are three species of the nightcralwer and they are the common night crawler, the European night crawler, and the African nightcrawler.

There are a few different ways to fish with nightcrawlers for walleye. First you need to select lively crawlers that are about 4 to 8 inches in length. Always gob at least two or three onto the hook. The best way to hook them is through the head. When walleyes see two or three night crawlers dangling from a hook it is hard to resist. Push a hook into the tip of the head and out about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch back from the tip. You can also use a worm blower to inflate your nightcrawlers. This will make the worm float off of the bottom to the walleyes can see it better. You need to inflate your worm correctly or it will look un-natural. Insert the needle just behind the collar and squeeze a small bubble of air into the head.

Nightcrawler fishing rigs:

• Hook night crawlers onto a two or three hook worm harness. MAKE SURE when you are hooking the worms that you leave some slack between the hooks. When you are using worm harnesses always use at least two to three nightcrawlers. Make sure your harnesses have at least a number 8 hook, but no larger then a number 2.
• Use a slip sinker rig with a number 8 to number 2 plain or floater hook. Inflate your worms to make them more appealing to the walleye.
• Use a slip bobber rig with plain or short shanked number 8 through number 2 hooks, or 1/16th ounce walleye jig.
• Use a split shot rig with a number 8 through number 2 hook. Hook at leaste 3 nightcrawlers through the head, inflate if you want.
• Use a weight forward spinner or spinner tipped with two or three night crawlers.
• Use a bottom walking rig with two or three number 8 through number 2 hook worm harnesses. use at least two crawlers , inflate if you want.
• Use a trolling plug tipped with at least two or three nightcrawlers.

I have found out throughout the years that it is very important to construct a plan before you arrive at your location of your next walleye fishing trip Especially if you plan to fish walleye live baits in the summer. Here are a few suggestions that I always use on all my fishing trips.

#1 Pick up a topographical map of the area you plan to fish.

Identify on the map all the weed bed areas. Next circle any weed bed areas that have a significant depth drop off of more than 3 feet , adjacent to the weed bed area. These areas can be walleye fishing sweet spots with the right weather conditions.

#2 Contact a local bait shop.

A key question to ask , is “What is the best live bait choice if I am going to be walleye fishing? Make sure you specify to the bait dealer the time of year you will be fishing. It is surprising to me how many walleye anglers bypass this simple very important step.

#3 Attach shinny spinner blades and rattles to your live bait walleye fishing rigs.

For added attraction, you can add shinny spinner blades and line rattles. Walleyes are attracted to flashes and they can hear the rattle vibrating in the water.

# 4 Suggested live baits for walleye fishing:

Spring and early summer live minnows are the best live bait. Note your interview with the local bait shop can be a very important resource. All minnows are not created equal when it comes to walleye fishing. You need to use minnows that are native to the area you plan to fish, and that are part of the local area’s walleye populations normal diet. In summer into early fall I have had the best luck with ribbon leach and large night crawler live bait combinations.

#5 Weather conditions:

5a When the day is sunny and there is no wave chop, head to the weed beds! Go deep into the beds and look for open pockets . Vertical jig using a ¼” oz lead head jig tipped with a ribbon leach or large night crawler. Attach bright spinner blades and line rattles if needed. These areas are hard to fish, but surprisingly productive. I pulled a 6 lb walleye out of one of these pockets.

5b If there are waves then head directly to the weed bed areas you circled on your topographical map. Back troll or drift parallel to the weed bed so your bait drifts within 5ft of the edge of the weed beds. Use a bottom bouncing rig here. Make sure you attach spinner blades and a line rattle approximately 12 inches above your bait. These area’s can be walleye fishing honey holes if the weather is right.

When you decide where you want to go on your next fishing trip in the summer months it is time to do some pre-planning. If you want to save precious fishing time then you need to construct a plan for the start of your fishing trip. I have provide you below some simple walleye fishing tips for fishing walleye live baits in the summer..

#1 Pick up a topographical map of the area you plan to fish.

Circle all weed bed areas on your map that have adjacent depth changes of more then a foot. When the weather is right and there is a wave chop, these areas are gold mine for walleye fishing.

#2 Contact a local bait shop.

Do some research and find a local bait dealer or fishing chat room that is local to the area you are going to be fishing. I am surprised how many people forget this important pre-planning walleye fishing tip. Find out what are the most used and most effective live baits. Make sure you ask specific questions for the time of the year you plan to fish these local areas.

#3 Attach shinny spinner blades and rattles to your live bait walleye fishing rigs.

No matter what water I am fishing I have had very good luck using flashing spinner blades and small rattles attached right above my walleye baits about 6 to 12 inches.

# 4 Suggested live baits for walleye fishing:

5a When you get out on the water and the sun is heavy, and there is no wave action head for the weed beds. Go deep into the weed beds to find open pockets. You still need to be quiet as you approach so use a paddle or you can use one of your boat oar as a paddle. Make sure your walleye fishing rig is spooled with at least 12 lb test line and use at least a 1/4oz jig chartreuse in color if the water is stained with a chartreuse curly tail tipped with a ribbon leach or night crawler. Vertical jig the open holes in the weed beds.

5b If there are waves then head directly to the weed bed areas you circled on your topographical map. Back troll or drift parallel to the weed bed so your bait drifts within 5ft of the edge of the weed beds. Use a bottom bouncing rig here. Make sure you attach spinner blades and a line rattle approximately 12 inches above your bait. These area’s can be walleye fishing honey holes if the weather is right.
