Acne is a common problem for teenagers, adolescent, and even some adults.  It can be painful, distracting, and damaging to your self confidence when acne lesions are active and visible. To help fight back against the problem of acne, modern medicine has invested a great deal of time and effort into developing a range of effective acne treatments.

A wide range of acne treatments

It usually takes some testing and trying different treatments before finding the acne treatment that works best for each and every individual. The good news is, there really are hundreds of different choices available to you to help with your acne problem.

The majority of acne treatments will fall into one of these categories:

Mild cleanser – These products are available over the counter in your local drug or beauty supply store.Although they contain mild ingredients, they are very capable of cleansing your face of dirt and bacteria. Good news as both are a main cause of acne.

Chemical – These products (also available over the counter) contain one of several different chemicals that are great for eliminating bacteria and reducing the occurrence of acne.Favourites include both salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.

Prescription – Acne is one condition where many options exist within the range of prescription drugs.  These acne treatments vary in how they work and what severity of acne they are able to treat. These medicines are prescription only and are therefore, not available over the counter. To get these medicines you must first of all see a doctor or dermatologist.

Other – A vast category of acne treatments which includes light therapy, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, and pulse light treatments. These types of acne treatments are usually only available through a recommendation from your doctor, dermatologist, or other skin specialist.

Stay clean, stay clear

Most experts would agree that keeping your skin clean and bacteria-free is the most important thing you can do in your fight against acne.  Bacteria are the primary cause of acne, so the more you can keep it away the more likely you are to keep the acne away as well.

In order to keep your skin clean there is no need to scrub it or even rub heavily. In fact by scrubbing harder you are very likely to irritate your skin. This is an ideal environment for bacteria and more bacteria means more acne lesions.  Less is more when it comes to cleaning your skin; use a light touch with less pressure, washing your skin no more than twice per day.

Medical companies are in business to sell their products, so they will claim they have the solution to your acne problems, however many of their products will contain the same or very similar ingredients to their rivals comparable product.A good acne treatment will not cause unnecessary irritation or cause unfortunate side effects like dryness, flaking and itching. If it makes it easy for you to clean your face, it is a good treatment for acne.

Should any particular product cause you unpleasant side effects you have the option of reducing your use of that product or changing to a different one.  Regardless of the products you choose to use, remember that it takes time for them to work.It is important to evaluate the effectiveness of any product you are using before changing to use something else. In order to do this you must allow it a decent amount of time to work, three to four weeks being the minimum recommended.
